La distribución de esta virus es mundial se transmite por secreciones y excreciones (orina).
En periquitos la enfermedad es muy grave sobre todo en aves muy jóvenes desde los 14 a 150 días de edad, la mortalidad es alta. Los síntomas que vemos con mayor frecuencia son distensión abdominal, hemorragias bajo la piel y a veces signos neurológicos previo a la muerte, falta de plumón en cabeza y cuello. A los supervivientes se les llama “runners” porque el crecimiento de las plumas se altera de tal modo que no pueden volar. En cacatúas pueden dar signos neurológicos.
En otros loros normalmente no afecta a las plumas y en adultos la respuesta inmune suele ser eficaz. Los Ecletus son muy suceptibles desde las 3 semanas a los 4 años. El diagnóstico se realiza por detección por PCR en el laboratorio. No existe tratamiento eficaz pero si medidas de control como la prevención y desinfección con lejía, evitar críar o mantener periquitos con otras espécies y la vacunación en aviarios.
